Leftist Omobude Agho, a prominent Human Rights activist and Coordinator-General of Edo Civil Society Organisations (EDOCSOs), has been abducted by gunmen wearing camouflage uniforms resembling those of the Department of State Services (DSS).

The abduction took place at Agho’s residence located in the Medical Stores area of Benin City, Egor Local Government Area, Edo State, at approximately 2 a.m. on Friday, June 14.

According to a family member who spoke on condition of anonymity, the assailants arrived in four vehicles, surrounded the activist’s home, and forcefully took him away without any prior notification or explanation.

The family member described the invasion as alarming, causing Agho’s neighbors and other residents in the vicinity to flee for safety.

Osazee Edigin, former spokesman for EDOCSOs, expressed concern on social media, likening the manner of Agho’s abduction to that of a notorious bandit leader. He raised suspicions that the operation may have been conducted by DSS operatives, questioning the excessive use of force for an activist who could have been summoned for questioning instead.

“At this point, we are trying to ascertain the reason for such a heavy-handed approach against a human rights advocate,” Edigin wrote.

The circumstances surrounding Agho’s abduction remain unclear, with calls mounting for his immediate release and transparency regarding the incident. Authorities have yet to comment on the incident or provide details on the ongoing investigation.

The abduction of Omobude Agho has sparked outrage among civil society groups and human rights activists, highlighting concerns over the safety and security of individuals involved in advocating for social justice and accountability in Nigeria.
