The family of Inspector Sunday Peter, a member of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command, is demanding justice after the officer died under mysterious circumstances during a patrol.

Inspector Peter, who hailed from Epeagbo Otukpa in the Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State, was reportedly found with cuts on his neck and bruises on his body, raising suspicions of foul play. Family sources revealed to SaharaReporters that despite claims from police authorities that he fell ill and died, they believe he was murdered.

According to the family, Peter left for a routine patrol with his colleagues on May 16, 2024, but never returned home. The next morning, a colleague called his younger brother to inform him that Inspector Peter had died and his body had been deposited in the morgue.

"The police claimed he fell sick during the patrol and was rushed to the hospital, but the facility requested a deposit of ₦100,000. Before the money could be raised, he was declared dead. However, a discreet investigation at the hospital confirmed that the officer was brought in dead," the family disclosed.

Further investigation at the mortuary revealed that the deceased had cuts on his neck and bruises around his body, suggesting he had been attacked. The family accuses the Lagos State Police Command of hastily arranging for his burial without providing a clear explanation of his death.

"The police authorities in Lagos are urging us to quickly bury the corpse next weekend in Otukpa, without disclosing what really happened. They have even printed posters for his obituary and issued a signal for the burial," a family source stated.

The deceased’s wife, also a police officer from Edo State, has reportedly been reluctant to confront the police authorities. However, the family has submitted a petition to the representatives of his constituency and the senator representing his senatorial district at the National Assembly, demanding an autopsy and thorough investigation into his death.

"If nothing is done urgently, the body of this innocent man who served his country diligently but was betrayed by his colleagues will be buried without justice. We call on well-meaning Nigerians, lawyers, CSOs, and political leaders, especially from Benue, to demand an autopsy and a thorough investigation," the source implored.

The family fears that without public pressure, Inspector Sunday Peter's death will be swept under the rug, leaving his wife and children without answers or justice.
