Sampson Iheanyi Amaku, affectionately known as Sampen, a distinguished former City Editor of Daily Times newspapers in the 1970s, has been confirmed dead. Amaku, who hailed from Eziama Ancient Kingdom in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, passed away last week at the age of 86 after a brief illness.

The news of his passing was shared in a statement signed by his family members, Comfort Amaku and Henry Amaku.

Before his death, Amaku had made significant contributions to journalism in Nigeria. He served as the state Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the defunct East Central State Council. During his tenure as chairman, he played a pivotal role in acquiring the present NUJ Press Centre in Enugu. The then Administrator of East Central State, Ajie Ukpabi Asika, donated the press centre and its surrounding space to the state council under Amaku's leadership.

Amaku's legacy in the field of journalism and his contributions to the NUJ will be remembered and celebrated by colleagues and the broader community.
