Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has broken his silence on the controversial arrest of deposed Emir Aminu Bayero, shedding light on the circumstances that led to the legal tussle and subsequent court ruling awarding N10 million in damages to the former monarch.

The Governor’s spokesman, Sunusi Bature, addressed the media in response to criticisms following the court's decision. He emphasized that the arrest of Bayero was prompted by concerns over public safety, particularly due to the deposed emir's attempt to reclaim the palace shortly after his dethronement.

Bature referenced an article by Bala Ibrahim, which criticized the Governor for alleged executive rascality and recklessness in governance. He defended Governor Yusuf’s actions, citing the repeal of the Kano Emirate Law (2019) and the enactment of the Kano Emirate Law (2024), which consolidated the emirate under one traditional ruler.

"The issue of Kano Emirship was handled in accordance with the wishes of the people of Kano State," Bature asserted. He further justified the arrest of Bayero as a necessary measure to prevent potential unrest in the state.

Regarding allegations of demolition of properties linked to former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and associates, Bature clarified that these actions were part of efforts to recover public assets unlawfully acquired. He dismissed criticisms as attempts to undermine the state government's commitment to transparency and accountability.

Governor Abba Yusuf, through his spokesman, reiterated his commitment to maintaining peace and security in Kano State, emphasizing that decisions taken were in the best interest of the state and its citizens.

The controversy surrounding the arrest of Emir Aminu Bayero continues to generate debate, with observers urging a balanced approach to uphold the rule of law while ensuring public order and safety.
