Chaos erupted in Rivers State following an order from Governor Sim Fubara instructing local government chairmen to vacate their offices upon the expiry of their tenures on June 17.

In a Tuesday morning broadcast, Governor Fubara announced that the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) would take control of the local councils effective immediately. He expressed gratitude to the outgoing chairmen for their service.

The transition, however, did not proceed smoothly. Several local government chairmen, loyal to former governor Nyesom Wike, resisted the order and attempted to forcefully re-enter the council headquarters, accompanied by police officers.

This resistance was met with strong opposition from local youths, supported by security forces. The pro-Wike chairmen were chased away, and their pictures and emblems were destroyed in the ensuing confrontation.

A dramatic video surfaced showing former Mayor of Port Harcourt City, Allwell Ihunda, and his security detail fleeing as youths aggressively pursued them.

The situation remains tense as the state grapples with the fallout from this contentious transition of local government power.
