Muhajid Asari Dokubo, a prominent figure in the Niger Delta and ex-militant leader, has issued a stern warning to the 23 local government chairmen in Rivers State whose three-year terms have recently concluded.

Dokubo urged these officials to comply with the end of their tenure and leave their positions without resistance. This call follows directives from Governor Siminalayi Fubara and support from Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, who both insisted that the chairmen step down.

Despite these orders, the chairmen have resisted, citing an amendment by the pro-Wike faction of the Rivers House of Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule, which extended their tenure by six months. This extension, they argue, is due to the governor's alleged failure to organize local government elections on time.

During the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations in Port Harcourt, Dokubo addressed this controversy, asserting that any attempt to extend their tenure contradicts the Nigerian Constitution. He emphasized that the chairmen cannot unilaterally extend their term and warned them against provoking the public's anger, which could have severe repercussions.

"Local government tenure has expired today, June 17, 2024. They should quietly go home. If they want to seek re-election in accordance with the constitution, they should do so," Dokubo stated. He reiterated that the constitution does not permit tenure elongation and urged the chairmen not to create unnecessary problems for the state’s residents.

Dokubo also cautioned young people not to be manipulated by political figures, pointing out that the genuine people's power should not be underestimated. He highlighted the unique nature of the Rivers State, stressing that no individual, including himself, is above the collective will of its people.

"Only one man can be governor of Rivers State at a time. The people of Rivers State are bigger than Muhajid Asari Dokubo," he said, emphasizing that no one could dominate or exploit the state for personal gain. He criticized the chairmen for attempting to hold onto power and reminded them that their positions were strictly time-bound.

In a final appeal, Dokubo encouraged the people to assert their power, stating that they have already begun to take over local government secretariats to maintain control until new elections are held. This, he said, reflects the will of the people who are unwilling to tolerate any overextension of political tenure beyond its lawful term.
