Protests erupted in Nairobi on Tuesday as demonstrators took to the streets to express their discontent with the finance bill proposed by the government, which includes new taxes on cars and a 16 percent tax on bread.

The move is part of President William Ruto's efforts to address Kenya’s substantial national debt, estimated at around $80 billion, by introducing various taxes since he took office in 2022.

The new tax proposals have been met with significant backlash from Kenyans, who are struggling with the high cost of living.

In response to the protests, which resulted in over 200 arrests as police attempted to control the situation, Chairman of the parliament finance committee, Kuria Kimani, announced a reversal of the taxes during a press conference on Tuesday.

This decision was made in an effort to reduce the tension and address the concerns of the public.

If this happened in Nigeria, army and police will show their power. In a democratic country, government listens to the voice of citizens but, in Nigeria the reverse is the case as they impose themselves on citizens
