In a dramatic operation, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) raided a shrine in the Igor community of Benin City, Edo State, used to store illicit drugs. The shrine, guarded by a large black snake, was discovered to have a specially constructed hole hidden behind wallpapers and surrounded by fetish objects for storing drugs.

The NDLEA's Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, announced the details of the raid in a statement released on Sunday. He revealed that various quantities of illicit substances, including methamphetamine, Loud, Colorado, and Arizona – potent strains of cannabis – were found in the hidden compartment. The total weight of the seized drugs was 8.743 kilograms.

The operation, which was intelligence-led, took place on Tuesday, June 18, 2024. During the raid, the snake guarding the shrine was neutralized, allowing NDLEA operatives to access the hidden drugs. Two women, Sonia Chinonso Ezumezu and Risikatu Tijani, were arrested at the scene.

In a related operation, NDLEA operatives raided the Usen forest in Ovia South West Local Government Area of Edo State on Saturday, June 22. During this raid, they apprehended two suspects, Obi Ferguson, 45, and Ernest Abanum, 46. The operatives recovered 209 kilograms of cannabis and a motorcycle.

The NDLEA continues to intensify its efforts in combating drug trafficking and abuse, leveraging intelligence and strategic operations to dismantle drug networks across Nigeria.
