A Nigerian Police Inspector has been tragically killed in an altercation with individuals reported to be naval officers in the Okokomaiko area of Ojo Local Government, Lagos State.

The incident occurred during a routine patrol by the Inspector and his four colleagues along Igbo-Elerin Road. The conflict began when the officers stopped a commercial motorcycle for a traffic violation.

The motorcycle rider, dressed in civilian clothing, and his passenger claimed to be naval personnel and resisted arrest, leading to a heated argument. Eyewitness Shola Shodiya recounted that the confrontation escalated into a physical fight.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident, stating that a report was received at Okokomaiko Police Station around 4:30 PM on Saturday. The police officers had attempted to impound the motorcycle at Beno Filling Station for riding against traffic when the rider and passenger resisted.

According to Hundeyin, the situation worsened when other uniformed naval personnel arrived and supported their colleagues in the confrontation. During the altercation, the Inspector collapsed and lost consciousness. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His body has been taken to Idi-Araba Mortuary in Yaba for an autopsy.

The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances and ensure justice is served.
