In a poignant display of love and solidarity, Mexico City commemorated Pride Month with a collective celebration of over a hundred same-sex marriages on Friday, June 28. The event underscored the ongoing struggle for equal rights and recognition within the LGBTQ+ community.
The ceremony kicked off with a vibrant performance by the Gay Choir of Mexico City, setting a festive tone for the occasion. Against this backdrop, 147 couples gathered to exchange vows and formalize their commitments in a civil ritual.
Among the excited participants was groom Ricardo Mercado, who shared his emotions: "I told myself that today is just a normal day, but I do feel the nervousness and emotion, this nice feeling especially, with all the community here united, you feel a nice energy."
Mass same-sex weddings have become a hallmark of Mexico City's annual Pride celebrations since the legalization of gay unions in 2009. The city supports and funds these ceremonies each year, reinforcing its commitment to equality and inclusivity.
Last year, the festivities included not only weddings but also administrative processes to facilitate gender changes for transgender individuals, marking significant milestones in Mexico City's LGBTQ+ rights journey.
