There was heightened tension in Oria-Abraka Community, Ethiope-East Local Government Area of Delta State, on Saturday, as policemen from the Abraka Division allegedly shot a girl, Rukevwe John, in front of Oria-Abraka Secondary School. The officers reportedly fled the scene immediately after the shooting.

Rukevwe John is currently fighting for her life at an undisclosed hospital.

Precious, the girl's boyfriend, recounted the incident. He explained that he was making a U-turn while driving when he heard someone hitting his vehicle from behind. Upon stopping, he realized it was the police and expressed his displeasure at their aggressive approach before driving off. Moments later, he heard a gunshot that penetrated his car and struck his girlfriend, who was seated in the back.

The Initiative for Social Rights Concerns and Advancements (ISRCA) has raised an alarm over the incident, urging Delta State Commissioner of Police, Surajudeen Olufemi Abaniwonda, to launch an immediate investigation and hold the responsible officers accountable.

ISRCA National Coordinator, Comrade Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen, stated that he had already contacted the Divisional Police Officer of Abraka, SP Fabian Ayameh, and Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe. Agberen emphasized the need to end police brutality and extra-judicial killings, stressing that the police must not abruptly end citizens' lives.

The community and concerned groups await action from the police authorities to address this alarming incident and ensure justice for the victim.
