Galadimawa community located on Airport Road in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, is one of those unplanned settlements where many low income workers live on account of the affordable accommodation.

The community, a stone’s throw from the glamorous but expensive Sun City Estate, plays host to different shades of characters.

Some of those who live in the community patronise the hordes of commercial sex workers who had almost a plot of land where they plied their trade.

But the prostitutes, who live in shanties, were visited by different type of customers last week when the youth in the community stormed the ‘red light district’ and demolished their living quarters.

Wielding machetes and sticks, the irate youths pulled down the structures built with roofing sheets and woods. Most of the sex workers were not allowed to dismantle their structures as the demolition squad levelled the shanties numbering about 47.

One of the affected commercial sex workers, who identified herself simply as Reis, lamented the attack on her “business,” from which she claimed to pay “tax” to the Gbagi community leaders on a monthly basis.

Reis, who said she made at least N25, 000 per week, said she would relocate to another place to continue with her business. “I don’t understand why the youth attacked our business when we pay tax to them every month. The surprising thing is that these youths are part of our customers and we treat them nicely, but all of a sudden, they came to demolish our house. Is it fair?” she queried.

Another sex worker, who declined to give her name, said she was confused about what to do next, adding that she had been stranded and had no place to shelter.

“The actions of the Gbagi youths have caused a setback to my daily ‘Adashi’ contribution. I don’t know where to stay now; maybe I will go back to Benue State,” she said regretfully.

She stressed that the youth collected levies from her group on behalf of the community leaders.

Justifying the demolition of the prostitutes’ quarters, the traditional ruler of Galadimawa, Mallam Musa Barde, told PUNCH METRO that the prostitutes had defiled the village and were corrupting the community.

“Our children are being corrupted by the harlots. These children have constituted the major patrons of the harlots and that is unacceptable to our people,” he added.
