In a swift action against the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests, police operatives arrested at least 11 youths and residents in Yobe State on Saturday morning, August 3. The arrests took place in the towns of Damaturu, Potiskum, and Gashua, as authorities intensified efforts to suppress dissent.
According to reports by SaharaReporters, those apprehended were taken from their homes, allegedly due to their active participation and vocal stance in the ongoing nationwide demonstrations.
A source familiar with the situation disclosed, "Several youths in Damaturu and Potiskum were detained, seemingly to penalize those vocal about the current economic challenges. Eleven individuals from Gashua have been transported to the state police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Damaturu."
The arrests have heightened tensions across the region, with fears that the crackdown could widen to target all participants in the peaceful protests.
In related news, global human rights organization Amnesty International has called for the immediate release of Umar Danjani, a protester who was arrested in Jigawa State. Danjani was detained on Thursday by the Nigerian Police Force while exercising his constitutional right to protest alongside thousands of others in the state.
Danjani was reportedly arraigned on Friday, with authorities securing an order to remand him at Birnin Kudu Prison in Jigawa State.
"Amnesty International demands the immediate and unconditional release of Umar Danjani, a protester against hunger who has been hastily remanded in Birnin Kudu prison. Intimidating and arbitrarily arresting critical voices for speaking out is unlawful," Amnesty International stated on X.
Additionally, Comrade Abiyos Roni, a rights activist, highlighted the situation, stating, "Jigawa State Police Headquarters and DSS have unlawfully arrested and detained Umar Danjani Hadejia for protesting in Jigawa State."
The recent arrests underscore growing concerns over the government's response to the protests, which have highlighted widespread discontent with economic hardship and governance issues across Nigeria. The protests continue to garner national and international attention, with calls for the government to address the grievances raised by the demonstrators.
