On Saturday, August 3, the Nigeria Police Force provided an update on the ongoing nationwide protests against economic hardship, refuting claims made by Amnesty International regarding the number of casualties. The Force also disclosed its actions in response to criminal activities during the demonstrations.
According to the Police, the total number of deaths reported during the protests, which began on August 1, 2024, is seven, contrary to Amnesty International’s report of 13 fatalities. The Police confirmed that nine officers sustained injuries during clashes with protesters.
In a statement issued by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, the Police Force revealed that it had arrested 681 individuals accused of various criminal offenses and seized two AK-47 rifles along with live ammunition from protesters. Adejobi cautioned that the protests have escalated into violence and advised law-abiding citizens to withdraw from the demonstrations.
Adejobi provided a detailed account of the incidents from the initial days of the protests:
- In Borno State, four individuals were killed and 34 others injured when suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP members infiltrated the protest crowd and detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
- In another incident, an unregistered Honda Prelude vehicle collided with protesters, resulting in the deaths of two civilians.
- In Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State, a local vigilante fatally shot a looter during a shop robbery attempt.
The Police report highlighted other issues such as armed robbery, arson, looting of public and private properties, and destruction of infrastructure during the protests. Adejobi emphasized that arrests were made and recoveries were achieved in connection with these criminal activities.
As the situation continues to evolve, the Nigeria Police Force remains focused on managing the unrest and maintaining public safety amidst ongoing demonstrations.
