Babatunde Oyetunji, an auto mechanic based in Osogbo, has reported a dramatic theft at his workshop on Ring Road, opposite the NNPC mega station. Oyetunji claims that armed individuals, dressed in Amotekun uniforms, raided his workshop on Monday, July 29, 2024, and stole vehicles and spare parts worth millions of Naira.
Speaking to journalists on Friday, Oyetunji described the raid as a significant loss. According to him, three vehicles, along with new automobile engines and gears belonging to his customers, were taken during the incident. He was informed of the theft by an apprentice while en route to Ibadan for work.
Oyetunji expressed confusion over the motive behind the attack and has called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and Osun State Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Umar Abba, to investigate the matter. He detailed that the thieves operated between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm, and that witnesses described some of the raiders wearing Amotekun uniforms and reflective jackets with the Osun government logo.
“I have been a mechanic for over 30 years without any issues with the law,” Oyetunji said. “The stolen items alone are valued at over N13 million, not including the vehicles.”
In response to these allegations, Yusuf Idowu, spokesperson for the Osun Amotekun Corps, issued a statement denying involvement. Idowu labeled the claims as false and defamatory, urging the public to disregard the reports. He accused the reports of attempting to damage the reputation of the Osun Amotekun Corps and warned against publishing unverified claims.
“The Osun Amotekun Corps was not involved in any such raid,” Idowu stated. “This is a deliberate attempt to tarnish our reputation. We will take necessary actions against those spreading false information.”
The situation remains under scrutiny as the police continue their investigation into the theft and the allegations against the Amotekun Corps.
