Recently, the Yobe State Government House was invaded by irate youths protesting against economic hardship and bad governance. The protesters, part of a larger national movement, expressed their frustrations over the poor economic conditions and accused elected officials of neglecting their duties and engaging in corruption.
The protest in Yobe began on August 1, 2024, with youths in Damaturu calling for the restoration of fuel subsidies, tackling food and social insecurity, and addressing unemployment. The situation escalated as protesters attacked properties belonging to political leaders, including a senator and a House of Representatives member, whom they accused of siphoning public funds and failing to develop their constituencies
The protests are part of a wider national outcry against bad governance, with similar incidents reported in other states like Jigawa. These demonstrations are scheduled to continue until August 10, 2024
