The South African Department of Home Affairs has uncovered evidence of fraud and identity theft allegedly committed by the mother of Miss South Africa contestant Chidimma Vanessa Adetshina. The investigation, initiated following a request from the Miss SA organizers to verify Adetshina's citizenship, revealed that fraudulent activities occurred 23 years ago when Chidimma was an infant, absolving her of any wrongdoing.
Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber stated that the investigation found prima facie evidence suggesting that Chidimma's mother may have stolen another woman's identity to register Chidimma. This alleged fraud caused difficulties for the real mother, who could not register her own child due to the identity theft. The investigation is ongoing, and the Department plans to press criminal charges against all involved parties once it is concluded.
The case has also highlighted the need for the digital modernization of Home Affairs' processes to prevent similar incidents in the future.
