Residents of Wukari Local Government Area in Taraba State are demanding justice after an eight-year-old boy, Julius Chinecherim, was allegedly brutalized by his step-grandmother. The incident, which has sparked widespread outrage, occurred last week when the boy’s step-grandmother reportedly burned his lips with firewood after accusing him of misplacing ₦500.
The step-grandmother, identified as 42-year-old Ngizi Onwuasoalya, is said to have used a piece of firewood to inflict the severe injuries on the boy, a claim that has left the community in shock and anger. The incident has continued to fuel tension in the area, with residents and community leaders calling for justice and intervention from the state government and child protection agencies.
Local residents who spoke to *DAILY POST* condemned the act, urging authorities to ensure that the case is handled with the seriousness it deserves. They expressed their support for the young victim and called for swift legal action against the perpetrator.
Confirming the incident, Wukari Local Government Chairman, Samaila Dauda, stated that the authorities have acted promptly. He revealed that the boy is currently receiving medical treatment at the Federal University Teaching Hospital in Wukari.
"The allegations are true," Dauda said. "An eight-year-old boy, Julius Chinecherim, suffered burns to his lips inflicted by his grandfather’s wife. I immediately ordered her arrest, and the boy is now being treated at the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Wukari. The woman is in detention and will be charged to court soon."
Community leaders and residents have expressed relief at the quick response from local authorities, but they continue to call for thorough justice to ensure that such a horrific act is met with appropriate consequences.
