In the early hours of Saturday, unidentified individuals set fire to the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Champion Zonal Headquarters, located along Federal College of Education (FCE) Road in Kontagora, Niger State. This attack marks the second time the church has been targeted by arsonists, with a similar incident occurring 10 years ago.
The recent attack has drawn widespread condemnation, particularly from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Niger State. The state Chairman of CAN, Most Rev. Dr. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, decried the act as barbaric and unnecessary, calling for immediate action from the government and security agencies. "There is freedom of worship in Niger State," he emphasized. "Swift action by the authorities will help prevent any escalation of tensions."
Pastor Samson Ogbebor, an assistant pastor at the church, recounted the events, stating that the fire broke out around 3:00 am on Saturday. "I received a distress call and rushed to the scene, only to find the church, which has stood for 20 years, completely burned down and its properties looted by hoodlums," he said. He also noted that the church had faced repeated challenges over the years, including a similar arson attack a decade ago. Despite attempts to rebuild and secure the premises, the church has continued to face hostility.
Elder John Aboje, a member of the church, expressed determination in the face of adversity, stating that the congregation would not be discouraged by the attack. He called on Governor Umaru Bago, the Emir of Kontagora, Alh. Muhammadu Barau Mu’azu II, and relevant security agencies to take the incident seriously and ensure justice is served.
The incident has been reported to the Division 'A' Police Station in Kontagora, and an investigation is underway to identify and apprehend those responsible.
