Taiwo Oluwagbenga, the mother of 17-year-old Samuel Oluwagbenga, is desperately seeking answers following the tragic death of her son during a school trip. Samuel, a student at Uxbridge College, lost his life in early July after struggling in the sea at West Wittering, a seaside village in West Sussex.
The incident occurred during a school outing with 49 other students. Samuel was spotted struggling in the water around lunchtime. Lifeguards quickly responded, using jetskis to reach him, and he was airlifted to St Richard's Hospital in Chichester. Despite their efforts, Samuel passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Nearly a month after the tragedy, Taiwo says she has yet to receive any official explanation about the circumstances surrounding her son's death. "Nobody has given me any answers. We are yet to get an update from the school," she told Sky News. "My son went, and he didn't come back. Fifty children went, and only my son didn't come back."
Samuel had only been in the UK for a year but had quickly adapted to life in his new environment. He was making friends at school, attending church every weekend, and even serving as a futsal coach in his spare time. A talented IT student, Samuel had plans to study the subject at university and often used his skills to help out at his church group.
His mother described Samuel as a supportive and caring son who looked after her and his younger brother. "Samuel never let me feel like I was alone. He supported me throughout," she said. "He would cook for me, drop his brother at school, and always checked on me when I struggled with my asthma."
The family’s grief is compounded by the lack of information and closure regarding the incident, leaving Taiwo and her family in deep mourning as they seek answers.
In a separate incident, three teenagers were injured in a shooting in south-east London on Wednesday night. According to the UK Metropolitan Police, officers responded to reports of a shooting on Otlinge Road, Orpington, around 10 p.m. An 18-year-old man was found with gunshot wounds and was treated by the London Ambulance Service before being taken to the hospital.
During a search of the area, officers discovered two additional victims, both 14-year-old boys, who had also sustained gunshot wounds. The police established that the shooting took place nearby on Yalding Grove. Fortunately, the injuries sustained by the three teenagers are not life-threatening.
Detective Inspector Raymond Sekalongo from the Trident investigation team stated, "Tackling violent crime in London remains our absolute focus, and reducing shootings is key to that." A crime scene remains in place as investigations continue.
