The ongoing dispute over Air Peace's flight operations in the United Kingdom has escalated as Nigeria's Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has formally lodged a complaint with his British counterpart. TheCable has learned that Keyamo sent a letter on August 1, 2024, to Louise Haigh, the UK Secretary of State for Transport, addressing the issue.
In the letter, Keyamo expressed concerns over the continued denial of landing slots for Air Peace at Heathrow Airport. He warned that if the situation is not resolved promptly, Nigeria may take retaliatory action by barring British Airways and Virgin Atlantic from operating at Lagos and Abuja airports.
This development marks a significant escalation in the diplomatic row, as both British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have extensive operations in Nigeria, connecting the country to the UK and beyond. The Nigerian government’s warning signals potential disruptions in air travel between the two nations if the dispute is not resolved soon.
The situation has drawn attention from aviation stakeholders, who are closely monitoring the unfolding events and their possible impact on international air travel.
