President Bola Tinubu has mandated that only individuals with official business attend the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. The directive aims to curtail unnecessary expenses and reinforce the government's commitment to reducing the cost of governance.

The Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, revealed this during a one-day retreat organized by the State House management for the leaders of government agencies. Gbajabiamila emphasized that the new policy would be strictly enforced.

"I just discussed with the President this afternoon. In the next few weeks, we are going to see a test of this policy during UNGA in New York," Gbajabiamila stated. He noted that in previous years, Nigeria had sent large delegations to international meetings like UNGA, often including individuals who had no official business there and used the opportunity for personal gain.

"This time, we will be strict. If you have no business at the UN General Assembly, do not step foot in America, and this is a directive from Mr. President," Gbajabiamila warned.

The decision comes amid growing public demands for a reduction in the cost of governance, particularly in light of recent protests. The President's directive is expected to set a new standard for international delegations, ensuring that only those with legitimate roles and responsibilities represent Nigeria on the global stage.
