The Gombe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has reported that 2,517 homes and shops have been either completely or partially destroyed due to severe flooding across 33 communities in the state. The Deputy Director of Relief and Rehabilitation at SEMA, Ibrahim Nalado, disclosed this information in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday.
The affected communities are located in Dukku, Funakaye, and Billiri Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state. According to Nalado, the flooding occurred following heavy rainfall between August 12 and August 22.
"In Dukku LGA, 10 communities were affected, while Funakaye LGA saw flooding in 20 communities. In Billiri LGA, three communities were impacted," Nalado said.
The disaster primarily damaged homes and a few farmlands, though fortunately, no lives were lost. However, two children in Dukku sustained injuries, and seven livestock were swept away by the floodwaters.
Nalado also highlighted the significant impact on agriculture, particularly in the Hina community of Yamaltu/Deba LGA, where approximately 1,000 hectares of rice, maize, sorghum, and millet farmlands were submerged.
"The damage is huge and devastating, especially since farmers were on the brink of harvesting their crops," Nalado remarked after a visit to assess the damage in Hina on Friday, August 30.
The agency is currently compiling data on the number of affected farmers and the extent of the damage. Nalado indicated that the severity of the destruction would require joint efforts from both the state and federal governments to address.
He appealed to the North East Development Commission and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for support, urging patience among the affected residents. Nalado assured them that assistance from the government and other agencies would be forthcoming.
