In a surprising development, more than 196 Nigerian soldiers, predominantly junior officers, have submitted requests for voluntary retirement to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Taoreed Lagbaja. The soldiers, many of whom are deployed in conflict zones like the North-East, plan to join foreign military forces, including the British Army, Ukrainian forces, and other Commonwealth nations.

According to information obtained by *SaharaReporters*, the soldiers cited frustration with poor welfare, inadequate equipment, and lack of motivation as key reasons for their decision. Sources within the army say many soldiers feel unsupported by the government in their fight against non-state actors, citing insufficient living conditions and outdated weaponry as major concerns.

The list of soldiers seeking disengagement, made public on Saturday, does not distinguish between those leaving voluntarily and those retiring for medical reasons. Brigadier OH Musa approved the formal disengagement on August 23.

None of the soldiers involved have reached retirement age or completed the mandatory years of service, raising further concerns about morale within the Nigerian military. This wave of voluntary retirements highlights broader dissatisfaction within the ranks, as soldiers reportedly consider better opportunities abroad in light of their challenging conditions at home.
