Tragedy struck in the early hours of Sunday morning as three people lost their lives and several others sustained injuries in a multiple vehicle accident in the Maryland area of Lagos State. The crash occurred around 12:57 a.m. and involved a diesel tanker and several cars.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement released by Nosa Okunbor, the agency's Head of Public Affairs. According to the statement, the tanker, fully loaded with diesel, experienced brake failure, leading to a loss of control and a devastating crash into multiple vehicles.
The affected vehicles included two Volkswagen Vanagon commercial buses, a Mitsubishi space bus, two mini-buses (Korope), and a Honda car, LASEMA reported.
"Following distress calls received at 12:57 a.m. via the 767/112 toll-free lines, LASEMA activated its Response Teams from the Onipanu Base and Command and Control Centre at Alausa," the statement said.
The LASEMA Response Teams arrived at the scene by 1:13 a.m., where they encountered a chaotic scene involving the tanker, which had crashed into several vehicles, resulting in multiple casualties.
In a related incident, another crash involved an articulated truck carrying a 40-foot container, which collided with a MACK truck transporting industrial bottles due to careless driving and over-speeding.
While three people were confirmed dead, an unknown number of critically injured victims were rushed to various hospitals before emergency responders arrived. The driver of the articulated truck was rescued with leg injuries and treated by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) before being taken to the hospital for further care.
The accident has reignited concerns about the safety of tanker and articulated truck operations in Lagos, as mechanical failures and reckless driving continue to claim lives on the city’s roads.
