A 55-year-old sugarcane seller, Sulaiman Potiskum, tragically drowned in a river at Gada, Bakin Kogi, located in Hadejia Local Government Area of Jigawa State. The incident occurred on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at approximately 9:45 a.m., when Sulaiman attempted to bathe along the riverbank but was overwhelmed by the strong current.
The spokesperson for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Jigawa State Command, ASC Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmud, confirmed the incident. Despite swift efforts by NSCDC search and rescue teams, as well as local divers, Sulaiman could not be saved. He was pronounced dead at the General Hospital Hadejia by a medical practitioner.
“His body was handed over to his relatives for proper burial in accordance with Islamic rites,” Mahmud stated.
The NSCDC also issued a warning regarding the rising number of drowning incidents in the state, urging residents to avoid swimming in flooded rivers and ponds, which pose significant threats to life.
