Justice Haruna Mshelia, a High Court judge in Borno State, who was kidnapped in June 2024, has been released after spending two months in captivity. His abduction occurred on Monday, June 24, when he, his wife, driver, and police orderly were ambushed by an armed group while traveling along the Biu-Maiduguri-Damaturu Road.
Justice Mshelia and his wife, a magistrate, were on their way from Biu to Maiduguri when they were seized between Borno and Yobe States. While the judge was freed on Saturday, September 7, 2024, his wife, driver, and police orderly remain in captivity.
The news of his release was shared on a WhatsApp platform for Borno lawyers, with a message reading, "Alhamdulillah, we have just received the news of the release of Justice Haruna Mshelia." The platform also called for continued prayers for the safety of the other captives.
Hamza Zannah, Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Maiduguri branch, confirmed the judge's release but expressed concern for the remaining victims still held by the abductors.
