A tragic gas explosion has claimed the lives of a couple, identified as Chioma and George, in Abakiliki, the capital of Ebonyi State. The spokesperson for the Ebonyi State Police Command, DSP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the incident to journalists on Thursday, September 12, 2024.
The couple had recently moved into their new residence when the explosion occurred. Initial reports speculated that the blast might have been caused by a dynamite or inverter battery explosion. However, it was later confirmed to be a gas explosion.
Chioma passed away five days after the explosion, while her husband, George, succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, while receiving treatment in the hospital. The incident has left the community in shock and mourning, highlighting the dangers associated with gas explosions in residential areas.
“The preliminary report shows that it was a gas explosion that k!lled Chioma and not dynamite or battery, although further investigation is still ongoing,” the PPRO said.
