A severe flood has caused widespread damage in the Azuoto and Okpuitumo communities of Abakaliki Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, inundating farmlands and properties valued at millions of naira.
On Friday, Chinyere Nworie, a local farmer, recounted the devastation to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). Nworie's rice, yam, and cassava farms were submerged by the floodwaters, which resulted from heavy rainfall that began on Friday and continued into Saturday. She explained that the proximity of the Azuoto and Ebony Rivers, which feed into the River Niger, exacerbates the flooding in the area.
Nworie revealed that the flooding is a recurring issue, aggravated by heavy rains that overflow the banks of the Ebonyi River each year. The disaster has affected at least 96 households, leaving many residents in dire need of assistance.
Another resident, Amauche Agbo, lamented the “unfortunate” situation, calling on government authorities at all levels to provide relief materials to alleviate the suffering of those affected.
In response, Uche Oba, Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), confirmed that the agency has begun assessing the damage to the affected communities. Oba acknowledged the severity of the situation and indicated that it remains a significant concern for the State Government.
Efforts are underway to provide necessary aid and support to the flood-stricken residents as the assessment continues.
