A suspected vandal was found dead inside a transformer substation located at Commissioners’ Quarters in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital. The incident, which occurred during an apparent attempt to tamper with the facility, has sparked renewed concerns over the dangers of illegal interference with electrical infrastructure.
The body of the suspect was discovered in the early hours of the morning by residents heading to the mosque for prayers. A police patrol team, "Operation Haba Maza," quickly responded to the scene, evacuating the body to the Damaturu Teaching Hospital mortuary. Relatives later identified and claimed the corpse.
According to the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC), the vandal was electrocuted while trying to tamper with exposed live wires. The company’s Communication Officer, Blessing Tunor, explained that the suspect had used his shirt to shield himself from the wires during the illegal act. However, he made contact with a live cable, which led to his instant electrocution. Fortunately, the transformer was not damaged, and no further acts of vandalism were reported.
Yobe State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, provided additional details, stating that the suspect had attempted to steal power assets during a power outage. "He was electrocuted when power was suddenly restored," Abdulkarim said, adding that the police were alerted by residents who found the lifeless body.
The Regional Manager and Operations and Maintenance Officer of YEDC also visited the site to assess the situation. Meanwhile, investigations into the incident are ongoing, as authorities continue to warn against the risks and legal consequences of vandalizing public infrastructure.
