Tragedy struck along the Onitsha-Nteje-Awka Expressway in Anambra State on Friday night, as a fatal accident claimed two lives near the Zone 13 Police Headquarters in Dunukofia Local Government Area.
The crash involved a private Toyota Camry with registration number UWN531AS and a commercial IVECO Turbostar tanker, bearing registration number ADM619XA. Eyewitnesses reported that brake failure led to the collision between the two vehicles.
Margaret Onabe, Acting Sector Public Education Officer for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra Sector Command, confirmed the incident. She disclosed that four individuals were involved in the accident: three male adults and one female adult.
"According to eyewitness accounts, the Toyota Camry experienced brake failure, lost control, and crashed into the tanker," Onabe stated. "Two individuals—a male and a female—died in the crash, while the remaining two men survived unhurt."
The victims’ bodies were taken to the mortuary before FRSC personnel arrived. Rescue teams from the Nteje unit managed traffic and removed the wrecked vehicles from the scene.
Anambra State FRSC Sector Commander, Corps Commander Joyce Alexander, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and urged drivers to adhere to traffic rules, perform regular vehicle maintenance, and prioritize road safety to prevent future accidents.
