More than 20 construction workers narrowly escaped death on Saturday morning when a two-storey building under construction on Daily Independent Street, Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, collapsed during a heavy downpour.
The street, located near Asaba Airport and opposite Vanguard Newspapers Press, was thrown into panic as the building crumbled, trapping several workers inside. Immediate rescue efforts began, with some workers already pulled from the debris, while the search for others continued at the time of reporting.
A worker at the scene, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that several laborers sustained injuries while attempting to leap from the second floor to avoid being trapped. Some, however, managed to escape unhurt, while those injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
"The site has been abandoned by the workers, and the site engineer fled to avoid arrest and possible retaliation from residents," the source added.
In a stroke of luck, one of the victims trapped under the rubble managed to make a call from inside, enabling the rescue team to locate him and others still buried in the collapse. The estate management team and the electricity task force have since arrived on-site, disconnecting power to prevent further dangers.
The Delta State government has yet to release an official statement regarding the cause of the collapse or the total number of those affected. Efforts to reach the Delta State Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Godknows Agele, for comments were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls or messages.
An official from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), identified as John, confirmed the agency's presence at the scene, saying, "Our men are on the ground to assist in the rescue mission." Rescue efforts are ongoing as the community waits for more updates on the incident.
