The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported a fresh attack on its 330-kilovolt Gombe-Damaturu-Maiduguri transmission line by vandals, causing a major power outage in parts of Yobe and Borno states.
TCN spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday, revealing that the sabotage occurred on September 21, 2024, at approximately 1:44 a.m. Vandals reportedly cut off all four tower footings, leading to the collapse of Tower T372 along the Gombe-Damaturu-Maiduguri section of the line.
The latest incident comes just three weeks after the transmission line was restored following a similar attack, which was believed to have been carried out by Boko Haram insurgents. The attack has again plunged Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State, and Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, into darkness.
In response to the attack, TCN has mobilized engineers to implement temporary measures to restore power. "Efforts are underway to back-feed Damaturu through a 33-kilovolt transmission line from Potiskum, while Maiduguri will be powered by the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP)," Mbah stated.
TCN has also begun preparations to dismantle the collapsed tower and reconstruct the transmission line to restore regular power supply to the affected regions.
This marks another setback in efforts to stabilize electricity in northeastern Nigeria, an area already struggling with frequent outages due to attacks on critical infrastructure.
