In a closely watched election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially declared Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the Edo State governorship election held on Saturday, September 21, 2024. Okpebholo secured a total of 291,667 votes, defeating Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 247,274 votes, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP), who finished with 22,761 votes.
INEC’s Returning Officer, Prof. Faruk Kuta, announced the results at 9:27 PM, eliciting cheers from APC supporters gathered at the collation center in Benin City. Kuta noted that Okpebholo had met all legal requirements for the governorship position.
With this victory, Okpebholo claimed over 10 of the 18 local government areas in the state, allowing the APC to regain control in two of the three contested senatorial districts. His win is attributed to a strategic alliance with notable political figures, including his running mate Dennis Idahosa and former deputy governor Philip Shaibu, as well as the support of Adams Oshiomhole, a prominent figure in Edo politics.
Okpebholo’s victory marks a significant shift in Edo State politics, particularly as the APC aims to reclaim power after losing to the PDP in 2020. The incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki, switched parties amidst internal conflicts, leading to his defeat of the APC candidate Osagie Ize-Iyamu in the last election. Obaseki has since campaigned vigorously for Ighodalo, while Oshiomhole has been instrumental in promoting Okpebholo's candidacy.
As Edo State prepares for a new administration, Okpebholo’s victory positions the APC to potentially re-establish its influence in the state’s governance.
