A female student lost her life in a tragic car accident on the campus of the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu on Monday. The incident occurred as students were celebrating their final year examinations, resulting in chaos and heartbreak.
Witnesses reported that a graduating student, caught up in the festivities, was driving recklessly when the vehicle allegedly experienced brake failure. The car veered into a crowd of students, striking several individuals before tragically running over the victim. One student, who preferred to remain anonymous, described the chaotic scene as students rushed to assist those injured.
A video circulating on various WhatsApp groups depicted the aftermath of the accident, showing students attempting to lift the vehicle while the body of the unidentified victim lay trapped underneath.
The IMT management has confirmed the incident, with Acting Rector Emeka Ejim issuing a statement on Tuesday. He expressed his sorrow and reiterated warnings he had given to students against “riotous and excessive celebration.” Ejim clarified that the deceased was not a student of IMT but a student from Peaceland University, which is located nearby. She had come to check on a fellow student who was injured in the accident.
In addition to the deceased, two other female students from the public administration department were injured. They are currently receiving treatment at Posh Hospital in the New Haven area of Enugu. One of the injured students, an HND I student, will be transferred to the Orthopaedic Hospital Enugu on Wednesday due to a fractured leg.
In light of the tragedy, the IMT management announced the indefinite suspension of final year examinations. Ejim stated, “The Academic Board and management will hold an emergency meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. to deliberate further.”
The institution's spokesperson, Mark Eze, emphasized the need for an investigation into the incident. “We want to find out what happened and how it happened. Despite all our warnings, these students still engaged in the type of celebrations that led to this incident,” he said, expressing concern over the situation.
