The Enugu State Government has demolished another property tied to kidnapping activities, reiterating its commitment to enforcing laws aimed at curbing criminality in the state. The latest demolition took place in Amaebo Owelli Autonomous Community, Awgu Local Government Area, where a mansion allegedly used as a kidnappers' hideout was brought down.
The Executive Chairman of the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, Hon. Uche Anya, who supervised the demolition, stated that the property had been identified as a location where kidnappers held victims and engaged in criminal acts. He revealed that a video, recorded in May 2024, showed a kidnapping victim being threatened at gunpoint inside the building. Fortunately, security forces were able to track the location, rescue the victim, and recover a significant cache of arms and ammunition.
"This is part of the Enugu State Government's ongoing battle against criminality," Anya told journalists at the demolition site. "This mansion was used as a kidnappers' den where horrific activities took place. We are here to dismantle this property to serve as a deterrent to others involved in such crimes."
According to Anya, the building was central to the kidnapping case of May 2024, when a man was abducted, stripped down to his undergarments, and forced to beg his family for ransom while several AK-47 rifles were pointed at him. The video of the ordeal was sent to his relatives, but the Enugu State Government's advanced security systems helped authorities locate and dismantle the operation. While most of the gang members were apprehended, the kingpin managed to escape but was later arrested in Lagos after fleeing to Ebonyi State.
Anya further explained the state's rationale for demolishing properties linked to crimes, saying, "Some have suggested that these properties could be repurposed for public good, but we want them torn down to erase any reminder of the heinous acts committed there. The Enugu State Government will not profit from criminality; we will simply destroy the properties and move forward."
The demolition is in line with Section 315 (Second Amendment) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 30, Laws of Enugu State, which mandates the government to demolish or seize any property tied to violent crimes, including kidnapping.
Hon. Anya also issued a stern warning to landlords, emphasizing that ignorance will not be accepted as an excuse. "Every landlord is responsible for what happens on their property. Whether you live abroad or are unaware of who is renting your house, if criminal activities take place on your property, especially violent crimes like kidnapping, the property will be demolished," he said.
The current administration, under Governor Peter Mbah, has ramped up efforts to dismantle properties linked to violent crimes as part of its broader anti-crime strategy. In August, similar demolitions were carried out in Enugu East LGA, targeting properties associated with kidnapping and arms smuggling.
The government maintains that no criminal will be allowed to benefit from the proceeds of their crimes, and the demolition campaign is a clear message to deter future offenders.
