Chijioke Ihunwo, the newly elected Chairman of Obio Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State, has made headlines by removing the name of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, from the administrative block of the council secretariat. Ihunwo, who took office alongside 22 other local government chairpersons, was sworn in by Governor Siminalayi Fubara following local council elections held last Saturday.
In a significant victory, the Action Peoples Party (APP) captured 22 out of the 23 available council seats, with the Action Alliance securing the remaining seat. However, the elections faced criticism from both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who expressed concerns over the electoral process.
On Sunday, Ihunwo took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce the change, revealing that Wike's name, which had previously been prominently displayed on the administrative building, has now been replaced with that of the late Obi Wali, a former politician and activist from the state. He shared a video documenting the removal of Wike’s name and the installation of Wali’s.
Ihunwo stated, “We have changed Wike’s name in the admin block of Obio Akpor Council, and replaced it with the name of SENATOR DR. OBI WALI.”
Wike, who served as the immediate past governor of Rivers State and is originally from the Rumuepirikom community in Obio Akpor LGA, was also a former local council chairman, making his removal from the council’s administrative block particularly symbolic in the ongoing political reshuffle.
