Abdelhakim Al-Shalmani, President of the Libyan Football Federation has resigned from his position amid the growing tension surrounding the treatment of Nigeria’s national team ahead of a crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.

Al-Shalmani announced his resignation on Monday, October 14, during a regular meeting of the Federation’s General Assembly.

Speaking on his resignation, Al-Shalmani disclosed that he doesn’t want to be part of the failure of Libyan sports.

Gistmania had earlier reported that the Nigerian team faced “Inhumane treatment” upon arrival in Libya, being held at an abandoned airport for over 15 hours.

Ever since, the Super Eagles resolved not to play the match, citing safety concerns.

Following their withdrawal from the match, the Super Eagles have landed back in Nigeria from Libya.

This maltreatment by Libya has sparked widespread condemnation, with Nigeria’s government summoning the Libyan chargé d’affaires in Nigeria and Sports Minister John Enoh calling for CAF action against Libya.

Nigerian footballers, Victor Osimhen and Chidozie Nwabali have publicly expressed disappointment over the team’s treatment.

The situation remains tense, with the Super Eagles refusing to play the qualifier match.
