Former Governor of Delta state, His Excellency, Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan is now 70 years old.
The two-time governor of the oil-rich state (2007-2015), was born to Chief Edmund and Mrs. Cecilia Uduaghan, of Abigborodo, in Warri North local government area of Delta state, on 22 October, 1954.
He attended Baptist Primary School, Mosogar, between 1961 and 1966. He later attended Government College, Warri. He had his tertiary education in the University of Benin (UNIBEN), where he trained as a Medical Doctor between 1975 and 1980.
He carried out his mandatory one-year National Youth service in Kwara state, where he was honoured as the most outstanding Medical Doctor in the set of medical doctors posted to the state in that service year.
Following the service year, he was employed by the Delta Steel Company (DSC), Ovwian-Aladja, where he also distinguished himself in service to the extent that he was honoured with the General Manager’s prize for Outstanding Service.
Uduaghan subsequently disengaged from the services of the Medical Centre of the DSC to set up a private medical facility, named Abode Clinic, named after his grandmother, under whom he grew up in Mosogar, Delta state.
His journey into politics began with trade unionism. He served as Secretary, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Warri, and also as Secretary, Association of Private Medical and Dental Practitioners, Warri Zone.
His first contact with partisan politics was in the run up to the National Assembly elections of 1992 when he mobilized support for his cousin, Chief James Ibori. Although he lost the election, Ibori however paid compliments to Uduaghan for providing technical expertise.
At the advent of the Fourth Republic in 1999, Dr Uduaghan who is a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Delta state, was appointed Commissioner for Health in the cabinet of then Governor James Ibori.
His efforts were recognised by the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS which honoured him as the best performing Commissioner for Health in the South-South geopolitical zone.
He was appointed Secretary to the State Government at the commencement of the second term of Ibori administration in June, 2003.
As fate would have it, he was elected governor after the expiration of James Ibori’s second term in 2007. Dr Uduaghan’s eight-year rule brought great transformationton to Delta state that is yet to be matched. Among his legacies as governor were the establishment of some of the best health infrastructure in the country as evidenced by the state of the art Oghara Teaching Hospital, Oghara.
Dr Uduaghan is married to Roli Nere Uduaghan and they are blessed with two children: Toritseju Uduaghan, Founder/CEO of Oroju Nigeria Limited, and Orode Meyiwa Uduaghan, who is the Delta state Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Community Support Services and Girl Child Development.
