The Gombe State Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old man, Mubarak Haladu, accused of kidnapping and murdering his 7-year-old nephew, Haruna Bello, in Yamaltu Deba Local Government Area. The suspect reportedly abducted the young boy and demanded a ransom of N1.5 million from his own brother, the child's father, before the tragic discovery of the boy’s body.
According to a statement issued Friday by the Gombe State Police spokesperson, ASP Buhari Abdullahi, Haladu was apprehended on October 17 by the Anti-kidnapping Unit following a detailed investigation. During questioning, Haladu allegedly confessed to the crime, detailing how he abducted Haruna and contacted his brother, demanding ransom. Tragically, the child’s decomposing body was found in an uncompleted building in Dadin Kowa village on October 18.
The initial report came on October 10 when the boy’s father, Bello Haladu, filed a complaint with the Dadin Kowa Police Station. He stated that Mubarak had contacted him, claiming to have kidnapped his son and demanding N1.5 million for his release. The case was transferred to the Anti-kidnapping section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
During his confession, Mubarak disclosed additional offenses, including multiple shop break-ins where he reportedly stole around 30 mobile phones. The police noted that one of these phones was used to place the ransom call to his brother.
The command confirmed that Haladu will soon face court proceedings. The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community, underscoring the ongoing battle against criminal activity in the region.
