Enugu's Coal City is on edge following the alleged killing of popular Ogene musician, Igbo Jah, by a police officer from the Anti-Cult Unit of the Enugu State Police Command. Youths in the Obiagu and Asata areas have taken to the streets, setting bonfires in protest of the musician’s death, which reportedly occurred Friday night.
Sources reveal that the incident took place after Igbo Jah attended an event at the Anti-Cult Unit headquarters. For reasons yet unknown, an officer allegedly fired at the musician as he was leaving, fatally injuring him. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Igbo Jah was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the incident. In a statement on Saturday, police spokesperson DSP Daniel Ndukwe reported that the officer involved, an inspector, has been detained in connection with the alleged murder of the musician, whose real name was Okezie Chikezie Mba.
"The tragic incident occurred around 8:10 p.m. on October 25, 2024, at the Tactical Squad’s Headquarters," Ndukwe explained. "The officer fired his rifle for reasons yet to be ascertained, resulting in the musician’s fatal injury. The victim was confirmed dead by medical staff upon arrival at the hospital."
Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, has ordered a full investigation by the State CID, pledging disciplinary measures for those involved. CP Uzuegbu expressed deep condolences to Igbo Jah’s family and friends, deeming the incident "unacceptable." He called on the public, especially the victim’s associates, to remain calm, promising that those responsible would face justice in accordance with the law.
The ongoing unrest highlights local frustration with the police, as citizens now await the outcome of the investigation into Igbo Jah’s death.
