The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) has officially refuted claims that suspects arrested during the August 2024 #EndBadGovernance protest were detained in adult custodial centers in Abuja.
In a statement released on Saturday, NCoS Public Relations Officer Abubakar Umar emphasized that the information circulating in certain media outlets is inaccurate. The clarification follows the arraignment of the protest suspects before Justice Obiora Egwuatu at the Federal High Court, Abuja Division, on Friday.
Umar stated, “Reports suggesting that these suspects were held in adult facilities are completely false.” He reaffirmed that the NCoS adheres to stringent correctional practices and is committed to upholding global standards in its operations.
Highlighting the regulations set forth in the NCoS Act of 2019, Umar noted that custodial center controllers are prohibited from admitting juveniles into adult facilities and are mandated to refuse additional inmates if a facility is at full capacity.
“The suspects in question were rejected, and none were remanded in adult custodial centers, contrary to the claims being circulated,” he added.
The NCoS reiterated its dedication to professionalism and human rights, in accordance with the United Nations Minimum Standard Rules for the Treatment of Juvenile Offenders.
In closing, Umar urged the public to dismiss the erroneous reports, reinforcing that they do not reflect the true circumstances regarding the detained suspects.
