In a significant operation against oil theft, troops from the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, alongside other security agencies, have successfully dismantled 29 illegal oil refining sites in the Niger Delta. This crackdown resulted in the arrest of 24 oil thieves, the destruction of 14 boats used in the illicit trade, and the recovery of over 700,000 litres of stolen petroleum products.
Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, the acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 6 Division, announced these developments in a statement. He detailed a particular incident in which troops intercepted a wooden boat near the Kula general area in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State, seizing over 150,000 litres of stolen crude and apprehending six suspects.
Further efforts led to the confiscation of another wooden boat containing over 50,000 litres of crude, as well as the deactivation of three additional illegal refining sites, where large cooking pots with over 20,000 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) were recovered.
In operations around Kay and Abesa in Akuku-Toru LGA, 10 illegal refining sites were dismantled, yielding over 400,000 litres of illegally refined AGO.
In Bayelsa State, operations along Boma Creek in Southern Ijaw LGA saw the deactivation of two illegal refining sites and the recovery of a storage facility holding more than 2,500 litres of stolen crude, along with the interception of two wooden boats laden with the same quantity of illicit products. Additionally, an illegal refining site in Obughene Creek was addressed, where over 4,500 litres of stolen crude was seized.
The campaign against oil theft also extended to Akwa Ibom State, where troops intercepted two Toyota Camry vehicles carrying illegally refined AGO. The vehicles, registered as AYB 704 FQ and KY 379 EB, were found with their loads concealed in nylon bags, totaling over 3,000 litres. Another Camry, registered KTS 277 LN, was seized in Ikoto, carrying 30 nylon bags of illegally refined AGO, and the driver was arrested.
The successful operations demonstrate a concerted effort by the Nigerian Army and allied agencies to combat oil theft, a persistent issue in the Niger Delta that poses significant economic and environmental threats to the region.
