At least 15 people have been laid to rest following a brutal attack in Mera, Kebbi State, reportedly by a new jihadist group calling itself "Lakurawa." The funeral on Friday was attended by Kebbi State Deputy Governor Umar Abubakar Tafida and the Emir of Argungu, Sama’ila Muhammad Mera, as mourners gathered to honor the deceased.
This tragic incident is the latest in a series of threats linked to the Lakurawa group, which recently surfaced in Sokoto State. According to reports, the group has been imposing taxes and levies on local communities while promoting anti-western and anti-democratic views similar to those held by Boko Haram. They have also reportedly set up bases within affected areas, moving through villages to preach their extremist ideology.
On Friday, Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters confirmed the presence of the Lakurawa group in northwestern states, particularly Sokoto and Kebbi, acknowledging that the group’s actions are exacerbating the security situation in the region. Hours after this announcement, suspected members of the group attacked Mera, leading to a deadly confrontation with locals that resulted in multiple casualties on both sides and a large number of cattle rustled.
Police spokesperson SP Nafiu Abubakar confirmed the attack, noting, “Yes, there was a terrorist attack on Mera yesterday, resulting in 15 deaths.” He added that while the attackers’ identities are still being verified, it is too early to confirm whether they were directly connected to Lakurawa.
The emergence of this group has heightened security concerns in Nigeria’s Northwest, with authorities closely monitoring developments to prevent further violence.
