Social commentator and author, Japheth Omojuwa, has recounted how he handled two police officers demanding N5 million bribe from him. Posting via X today November 21, Omojuwa said the officers had stopped a person driving his car in Abuja and claimed the car particulars had expired.

He said the officers had asked for N1 million bribe from the person driving his car.  The driver then called him to inform him of what was happening. Omojuwa told the officers to check properly as his vehicle papers were up to date. He said they went from N1 million to N5 million. He said seeing that they were out to extort him, he asked them to toll his vehicle to their office and he would later come to see their boss. The officers became jittery and immediately asked the driver to go.

Omojuwa said he fears for people who have no network, means or even know their rights as they drive on the roads across the country. Read his post below

‘’Police stopped my car in Abuja. Someone else was driving. They said he is a Yahoo Boy, so he should sort them N1m. He said he’d rather call the owner of the car.

They call me. They said my papers were expired. I said that can’t be. I gave them permission to search the car, that they will find the active papers there. But expired papers? That’s a dead conversation.

Then they asked me for N5m. I told them that’s no problem. Take the car and the man to your office. I will come and sort it with your bosses later.

After that call, they started asking him who I was. He said he too doesn’t know. That he just knows me as my name. He now asked them what happened? They said he should go away, quickly. That was the end.

I fear for people who drive in our cities who don’t have the means, network, knowledge or their rights or confidence to navigate these things.

We. Still. Have. A. Long. Way. To. Go. And waka never even start.''
