Tension has gripped the Eha-Amufu area of Isi-Uzo Local Government in Enugu State after an armed herdsmen attack left three farmers dead and several others injured in the Mgbuji community. The assault, which took place on Friday, has devastated local residents, many of whom are in shock following the brutal killing of farmers and destruction of rice fields.

Disturbing video footage circulating online shows one victim slaughtered in his rice field, lying next to a basket of cassava he had harvested moments before the attack. The violent event is part of a larger pattern of incidents: from 2017 to 2022, similar attacks by suspected Fulani militias reportedly destroyed over 20 farm settlements in Eha-Amufu, with more than 120 residents killed.

Community leader Ogenyi Odoh expressed deep frustration over the unrelenting violence. He stated that the herdsmen not only killed three farmers but also ravaged hectares of rice farms that were nearing harvest. Odoh noted that these attacks on farms began about two weeks ago, intensifying the hardship in the area.

To worsen the community's plight, wounded victims are being denied care at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUT Parklane) due to an ongoing workers' strike. Odoh revealed that the withdrawal of soldiers from Eha-Amufu before the attack left residents more vulnerable, fueling suspicions of a lack of protection or coordination from authorities.

"Today, three innocent farmers were killed brutally. Their only offense? Going to tend their farms. When they asked the herdsmen to leave their fields, the response was violent, as seen in video footage of one man killed in his rice farm," Onbdoh told *Sahara Reporters*. He lamented that large swathes of cultivated rice, the product of four months of labor, were maliciously destroyed by the attackers.

Odoh also highlighted the limited presence of security personnel in the area, with only six soldiers reportedly stationed to secure Eha-Amufu’s extensive border with Benue State. He explained that while local vigilantes are doing their best, they are outmatched by herdsmen armed with AK-47 rifles. One of the critically injured victims was reportedly rejected at Parklane Hospital and is now receiving treatment at a private facility, where a staggering N3 million has been demanded for urgent care.

Efforts by *Sahara Reporters* to obtain comments from Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer Daniel Ndukwe were unsuccessful, as calls and messages seeking his response went unanswered.

As the situation remains tense, Odoh is calling for immediate intervention from both federal and Enugu State authorities, urging for increased security measures to prevent further bloodshed and destruction.
