A businessman attempting to smuggle a significant quantity of cocaine was apprehended by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), according to a statement shared by the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, on Sunday. The announcement, made via Babafemi’s X account (formerly Twitter), included a video showcasing the seized drugs.
While the identity of the suspect remains undisclosed, the businessman reportedly ingested a substantial amount of cocaine in an attempt to evade detection. Babafemi issued a stern warning to potential traffickers, writing, “Detty December: Before you swallow those drugs, please remember that the new NDLEA has the capacity and capability to catch you.”
The NDLEA has expressed that the suspect, who has since excreted the drugs, will likely spend the Christmas holiday in custody and faces the possibility of a life sentence if convicted. The arrest serves as a stark reminder of the agency’s ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking, especially during the holiday season, when such activities tend to increase.
