A late-night fire outbreak has destroyed several shops under the Idumota Bridge in the Ebute Ero area of Lagos, leaving goods worth hundreds of millions of naira in ruins. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement released on Saturday.
According to Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, the agency received a distress call at 10:20 p.m. Emergency response teams from Lekki, Cappa, and the Command and Control Centre in Alausa were swiftly deployed to the scene.
"Upon arrival at 10:55 p.m., multiple buildings housing shops primarily dealing in car spare parts were engulfed in flames," Oke-Osanyintolu stated. While the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, no casualties or injuries were reported.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Federal Fire Service collaborated with LASEMA to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings. Law enforcement agencies were also present to maintain order and ensure the safety of onlookers.
Efforts to completely extinguish the fire are ongoing, with dampening down operations underway to eliminate remaining hot spots. Emergency responders are also working to recover valuable property from affected shops.
The incident highlights the vulnerability of densely packed markets to fire outbreaks, with significant economic losses often suffered by traders.
