Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has announced the successful reintegration of repentant bandits into society, signaling a significant milestone in the state’s ongoing efforts to combat insecurity and foster sustainable peace.
Speaking at an event in Birnin Gwari, the governor unveiled details of the state’s collaboration with federal agencies to create a groundbreaking initiative known as “The Peace Dialogue Group.” This initiative focuses on engaging critical stakeholders and building trust within conflict-prone communities.
“Through numerous meetings and extensive discussions, we have built bridges of trust. Senior bandit leaders, along with their followers, have laid down their arms and embraced peace,” Governor Sani revealed.
To ensure these individuals transition into productive members of society, the state government has partnered with the Federal Government to design a rehabilitation program. This initiative adheres to international standards of disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration, providing a robust framework for societal reintegration.
“Our approach follows a carrot-and-stick principle,” Sani stated. “While we welcome those who choose peace, we will not hesitate to take decisive action against anyone who persists in violence. Our security and intelligence agencies have already achieved remarkable successes, neutralizing notorious bandit kingpins, dismantling criminal networks, and rescuing victims of kidnappings.”
The governor also highlighted the creation of the “Kaduna Model,” a comprehensive strategy addressing both the symptoms and root causes of insecurity. This model integrates disarmament, rural development, and conflict resolution while fostering inclusive governance and strategic communication.
“Insecurity is on the decline, and longstanding issues such as ethno-religious tensions and farmer-herder clashes are rapidly diminishing,” Sani added. “Communities from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds now stand united in supporting our peacebuilding efforts, fostering greater harmony and mutual understanding.”
Governor Sani’s proactive measures aim to restore lasting peace and security in Kaduna, presenting a promising blueprint for other states grappling with similar challenges.
