The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has condemned a purported declaration of Biafra in Finland, branding it a fraudulent act orchestrated by an unknown group. In a strongly-worded statement on Sunday, IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, dismissed the event as a distraction and reaffirmed that the Biafra declaration led by the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu in 1967 remains the only legitimate proclamation.
“There will be no second declaration of Biafra,” IPOB stated, emphasizing its focus on restoring the sovereignty declared in 1967. The group is calling for a United Nations-supervised referendum to achieve this goal.
IPOB commended media organizations and bloggers who ignored the event in Finland, describing it as a “mockery of the Biafra struggle.” The group accused those behind the declaration of attempting to destabilize the Southeast region and tarnish the image of the Biafra movement.
“The individuals involved in this Finland charade are the same people sponsoring insecurity in the Southeast. Their aim is to divide Biafrans and derail the legitimate struggle for self-determination,” the statement read.
IPOB highlighted the leadership of its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who it said resisted similar pressures to make a premature second declaration of Biafra. The group praised Kanu’s strategic approach, describing him as a “brilliant freedom fighter” who understands the intricacies of self-determination efforts.
The group further accused the Finland-based organizers of exploiting the Biafra struggle for personal gain, warning that their actions would have consequences. “The blood of Biafra’s fallen heroes will hunt those obstructing the restoration of our sovereignty,” IPOB declared.
IPOB urged Biafrans and supporters to disregard the Finland declaration, labeling it a scam designed to distract from their legitimate cause. “The Biafra struggle is sacred, and sacrifices have been made for its restoration. We remain committed to achieving this goal through peaceful and lawful means,” the group concluded.
The statement underscores IPOB’s determination to distance itself from any activities it deems detrimental to its mission, reinforcing its commitment to the restoration of Biafra sovereignty through structured, internationally recognized processes.
